MASTERING NUMBERS
Math is a cumulative academic. A student must know basic facts in order to perform more complex problems. Math combines a specific vocabulary with concrete functions that operate in specific steps. Math is more than just numbers; it involves language, sequencing, spatial ability, memory, and higher order cognition. In addition to training students in the specific subjects of math, The Thinking Center offers extensive training in the following underlying skills of math:
Math Facts training involves the following: number sense, counting, symbol mastery, establishing order, memory and attention controls, adding subtraction, multiplication and division facts, developing accuracy, and speed.
Math Procedures are the details in a math problem. This training involves: math symbol mastery, application and order of math rules that guide computation and problem solving, patterns, place value, memory and attention.
Math Concepts involve the training of the language of math. The procedures include: visualization, paired association, defining math language, relationships between concepts, and the application of solving a variety of math problems.
Math Problem Solving involves tuning up logic and reasoning, mental imagery visual organization, a systematic process of attacking of problem, adjusting strategies, sequencing steps and understanding the language of the problem.
